Our First Attempt at Growing Dahlias

This year Jesse and I have decided to try something new: growing dahlias.
As first-time gardeners, we’re very much learning as we go, but we thought it would be fun to document the process from the very beginning.
Our original plan was simple enough, head out, pick up a couple of dahlia bulbs, and see how we got on. What we didn’t anticipate was just how many incredible varieties there are. Once we started looking at the colours, shapes, and sizes, choosing just one or two quickly became impossible.
So… we might have gone a little overboard.
Before we knew it, we were walking away with a whole collection of different dahlias from deep reds and bright pinks to oranges, whites, and some really striking patterned varieties. Each one looked so different from the next that it felt like a shame to leave any behind.
At the moment, the bulbs are sitting in pots in our living room while we wait for the weather to warm up a little more. It’s not exactly their final destination, but it’s the perfect spot to get them started while the risk of cold nights is still hanging around outside.
Dahlias are known for producing incredible blooms throughout the summer, and the idea of having all these different colours flowering at once feels pretty exciting.
Of course, as first-time gardeners we’re fully expecting a bit of trial and error along the way. There will probably be a few mistakes, a bit of Googling, and plenty of learning as we go. But that’s all part of the fun.
For now, we’ll keep them cosy indoors and keep an eye on the weather.
As soon as it’s warm enough, the plan is to move them outside and start building what we’re hoping will be a garden full of dahlias.
